# Clock In

> Start a shift with opening cash float and payroll time tracking.

Clock in at the start of every shift. This records the opening float, links every subsequent action to the staff member, and starts payroll time tracking.

## Overview

Clock-in captures:

* Staff name and role
* Terminal and branch
* Opening cash float (for cashiers)
* Timestamp — the payroll start

</Frame>

<Note>
  Non-cashier roles (waiters, kitchen) can clock in without a float — the float step is skipped automatically.
</Note>

## Tips & best practices

<Tip>
  Count the drawer with a witness. Two-person counts eliminate almost all opening-float disputes.
</Tip>

## Common mistakes

<Warning>
  Do not clock in on behalf of a co-worker. Every action after clock-in is tied to your PIN.
</Warning>
