# Category Reports

> Sales and margin rolled up by menu category.

Category Reports roll up sales and margin by menu category (starters, mains, drinks, desserts). Useful for balancing your menu and spotting trends.

## Overview

Every product belongs to a category (see [Categories](/menu/categories)). Category Reports aggregate:

* Sales volume
* Revenue
* Discounts and refunds
* Contribution margin

</Frame>

<Note>
  Categories can be renested. Consolidate related subcategories at report time without changing menu structure.
</Note>

## Tips & best practices

<Tip>
  Balance your menu on the numbers, not intuition. If starters are only 5% of revenue, that's a menu-design signal.
</Tip>

## Common mistakes

<Warning>
  Do not put every item into one big "Food" category. Reports become useless. Meaningful categorisation is worth the effort.
